Bush Vetoes Waterboard Ban (Update)
Sat Mar 08, 2008 at 12:27:01 PM PDT
This quote says it all:
"The bill Congress sent me would take away one of the most valuable tools in the war on terror," Bush said in his weekly radio address taped for broadcast Saturday. "So today I vetoed it," Bush said.
What more can I say. The US Congress tried to make it clear that we will not allow torture and George W. Bush said, oh yes we will. There is no spinning this. If the Republicans uphold Bush's veto, we go into the 2008 race with the clear message:
REPUBLICANS SUPPORT TORTURE. DO YOU?
And this is likely what we will see based on the initial vote.
But based on the margin of passage in each chamber, it would be difficult for the Democratic-controlled Congress to turn back the veto. It takes a two-thirds majority, and the House vote was 222-199 and the Senate's was 51-45.
We will now see how John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama vote on this bill. Something tells me we may see an interesting contrast.
Update: I now see this was diaried as early as last night. But I am shocked this story is no where to be found on the rec list. I will leave my diary up for now, but I would think this story needs to be on the rec list, so people can rec up the original diary I've linked.
